GRÜNTUCH ERNST ARCHITEKTEN, Berlin
Nearly 10 years after their first exhibition at Aedes East, the Berlin architects Grüntuch Ernst present a cross-section of their current projects, this time at Aedes West.
In the meantime, they have achieved recognition through a number of prize-winning buildings, among them their apartment building at Hackesche Markt in Berlin/Mitte, their school building at Hellersdorf/Berlin, and their office building at Hamburg Neumühlen. Invitations to exhibitions, workshops and competitions have taken them to Moscow, China and Malaysia.
Under the title “urban upgrade,” Grüntuch Ernst now present strategies for urban densification and complexification on the basis of their projects of the past five years.
The spectrum includes individual approaches to solutions intended for various locations and functions that are in a process of change. These include residential, office, and transport buildings, hotels and educational facilities, and are found both in urban centers and peripheries. They form the tesserae of a mosaic for reprogramming urban surfaces for new worlds of life and work. They represent a new attitude toward life, and a desire for the rediscovery and reinterpretation of an urban quality of life.
On view in the exhibition are presentations of the schools in Dallgow-Döberitz and Berlin Mariendorf, hotels for Flensburg and Berlin, and new residential buildings in Hamburg and Berlin, as well as for the conversion of a department store from the 1960s into a contemporary office and commercial building at Brill in Bremen, and the conversion of train concourse from the 1970s into an urban transport terminal in Chemnitz.
This year, Armand Grüntuch and Almut Ernst were chosen as the General Commissioners for the German contribution to the Architecture Biennale in Venice.
