Exploring Tectonic Space: Architecture of Jong Soung Kimm

-------------------------------------------

Born in Seoul 1935, Jong Soung Kim´s roots are in Korea, but he spent important years as an architect in Chicago. Trained at the Illinois Institute of Technology (ITT), he worked from 1961 to 1972 at the office of Mies van der Rohe after his graduation. His collaberation included the realisation of the Toronto-Domination Centre Banking Hall, the reception hall at the 54th floor of the T-D Center, and the exhibition design of the new Brown Wing Museum of Fine Arts in Houston. These projects visualized the unique approach of designing spaces that became a distinguished mark of Mies and his collaborateurs and influenced further projects of Jong Soung Kimm significantly. From 1966 to 1978, Kimm tought at the ITT, besides his practical work and then returned to Seoul in order to co-found the company SAC International, Ltd., Architects-Consultants. As one of the leading architects, he created an enormous amount of buildings such as the internationally renowned Weightlifting High School for the Olympic Games of 1988 in Seoul, various university buildings, museums, the Hilton International Hotel in Seoul and the recently completed headquarter of an international large concern. Jong Soung Kimm`s work is not only influenced by his admiration for Mies van der Rohe, but also formed by a Korean sensibility based on his cultural background and education in Korea. Hence, Kimm´s creations are a unique fusion of both aspects. Important Buildings: Seoul Hilton Hotel, 1977–1983; Korea Military Academy Library, 1980–1982; Seoul National University Museum, 1984–1994; Kyongju Sonje Museum of Contemporary Art, 1987–1991; Seoul Museum of History, 1987–1998; Weightlifting High School for the Olympic Games in Seoul, 1984–1986; SK Corporation Headquarters Office Building, 1986–1999

The Author: In Ha Jung, Professor at the Hanyang University in Seoul for Architecture History and Architecture Theory, worked in 2007 at the Graduate School of Design, Harvard University, on a case study about modern architecture and urbanism from Eastasia. He published various books about modernization of Korean architecture and urban space.
