The exhibition “Re‐Imagining Architecture,” curated by Lukas Feireiss, deals with the creative reciprocity, which operates between architecture and visual arts. The shaping of contemporary space calls for forms of creativity, which transcend static models of architecture. Structures expand and dissolve: prevailing now is a transformational, a multidimensional understanding of both architecture and space.
For some time now, the generation of spatial structures has ceased to be the exclusive province of architects: artists and creative personalities also contribute to the current wealth of design ideas. Their visionary conceptions for new buildings and urban spaces enable us to playfully explore and extend our perceptions and experiences of architecture.
At the same time, they succeed in endowing with expression that which is genuinely distinctive in design.
The term “re-imagining” refers to the process of recombining already familiar elements. The origins of re-imagining can be found in the world of film marketing. In remakes or new versions of films, the audience receives credible assurance of being presented with a new product – a new film. At the same time, the remake must be anchored in key features of the original. The same is true of the works exhibited here. Presented are photographs, films, and installations. The participating artists are Matias Bechtold, Evol, Daniel Gonzalez, Dionisio Gonzalez, and Erik Olofsen.
Curator Lukas Feireiss was born in Berlin in 1977, is active as a curator, writer, and artist, and is engaged internationally in the areas of architecture and visual culture in ways that transcend disciplinary boundaries. He is an associate lecturer at various universities in Germany and abroad, and the architecture editor of Gestalten Publishers in Berlin. He studied religion, philosophy, and anthropology in Berlin and Rome.
