TOPOTEK 1, Berlin
The exhibition "Thinking and Working" in Aedes West shows designs by the Berlin landscape architects TOPOTEK 1. The garden architects' self-image is characterised by idea generation, reference to place and the creation of identity. The exhibition focuses on designs for the Landscape Garden Show in Eberswalde 2002.
Rolling mill, horseshoe factory, iron splitting plant - almost 200 years ago, Brandenburg's industrialisation began at the Finow Canal in Eberswalde. Today, ribbons of steel criss-cross the site. They mark the transformation of an early industrial area into a landscape park. With their design for the State Garden Show, Martin Rein-Cano, Lorenz Dexler and team prove that their work can mediate between the industrial history and present of a small town in the north of Brandenburg, between a flower show and a landscape park. TOPOTEK 1 has helped the place gain a new identity.
In 1998 they won the competition for the Eberswalde State Garden Show, which opened in April 2002. On an area of 17 hectares directly on the Finow Canal, a former industrial site was redeveloped in just three years and transformed into a new kind of park that differentiates between an experience axis and spatial expanse without falling apart. A park with diverse details ranging from picturesque situations on the lock island to urban asphalt graphics in front of the new stage. All the steps from planning to implementation were captured on medium-format slides by Dutch architecture and fashion photographer Hanns Joosten. This documentation can be seen in its entirety in the exhibition.
In addition to the Eberswalde State Garden Show 2002, other TOPOTEK 1 designs will be shown: an integrated transport system in Karlsruhe, the redesign of the Vienna River Tunnel, Breitscheidplatz in Berlin and the Federal Garden Show 2005 in Munich.
