Joachim Manz, Bremen

The exhibition ‘Stadtstücke’ presents sculptures by the artist Joachim Manz in the Aedes East Extension Pavilion. Joachim Manz links the realms of “public” and “interior” spaces by constructing a series of concrete sculptures/architectural works, each consisting of two precisely related parts. One part is on view in the pavilion, while its complement (generally smaller) has been installed at a suitable location in Berlin’s urban space. The sculptural quality of the individual components is intended to match that of the assembled object. A map of the city on display in the pavilion shows the location of each “satellite.” Each work has its conceptual point of departure as much in a specific situation within Berlin’s public space as it does in the exhibition space.
For 19 years now, Joachim Manz has worked as an independent artist in the zone lying between architecture and sculpture. Among others, he has been awarded a German government scholarship to the Villa Massimo in Rome, and a grant from the Kunstfond (Art Fund)/Bonn.
