Zerr Hapke Nieländer Architekten
The Berlin office of Zerr Hapke Nieländer Architekten has been in existence since 1994. In addition to design and conceptual work and teaching, their main areas of focus include the realisation of numerous works of art in public spaces, planning for spoken word and music theatres and sports forums. After winning numerous competitions, her first major independent project was the viewing platform and documentation centre for the Berlin Wall in Bernauer Strasse between 1998 and 2003. The striking steel construction of the 20-metre-high observation tower convincingly connects the Berlin Wall Memorial on the opposite side with the newly designed museum. The tower stands confidently next to the former parish hall of the Reconciliation Parish from the 1960s. Its architecture is simple and matter-of-fact, but at the same time exciting and boldly constructed. In its form and choice of materials, the architecture sees itself as a reference to the border strip of the Berlin Wall opposite, which is preserved here in the depths. The exhibition is intended to draw attention to a young Berlin architectural practice that has succeeded in making a concise contribution to the current architectural discussion with its design.
